Our focus is to combine art in its purest form with functional, everyday objects. The effect of this combination is that art is imported into the everyday life of the viewer. Our art is not symbolic, but our interpretation of what we see and what we believe is beautiful and interesting.

In a world of mass production, we believe that having a unique piece or item is essential as it is a tangible representation of each person’s individuality. Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known. Every piece that we make, whether it is a simple canvas or a functional piece of art such as a lamp, is unique and handcrafted.

Karro Lifestyle was created by Marcel Wicht and Liesl Strauss.

With a background in engineering, Marcel focuses on design and problem solving. He ensures that every piece of functional artwork is in perfect working order. As engineering is the professional art of applying science to the optimum conversion of natural resources so as to improve the general standard of living for individuals, Marcel has been working on “art” for most of his life. He ensures that any figment of imagination can emerge, through the aid of science, to a plan and the consequent realisation in stone, metal or energy. An avid photographer, Marcel captures everyday images in a creative way so as to show the “ordinary” in an extra ordinary way, bringing attention to beauty that is already there.

Liesl Strauss has been passionate about art from a very young age and has always been painting, drawing or doing some form of art. Her focus is on the outward appearance of each item. To an engineer, good enough means perfect. With an artist, there's no such thing as perfect. Thus, the collaboration of Liesl and Marcel’s skills creates the perfect balance between artistic and functional.

Now they have combined and expanded their business and by also included a full Deli/cake shop and gift store along with the art and art classes they offer!

Our art is in no way limited to any given material. This world is but a canvas to our imagination. Therefore we do not find work to do in our chosen medium, but rather find an interesting medium, and then create an artwork that emphasises the existing beauty of it. Some of our mediums include bisque pottery, enamel, acrylic and watercolour paints, wood, stone, shell, vinyl, beads, tin and wire. The medium acts as the inspiration. We do work mostly in acrylic, as Acrylic is the only painting medium that can be all mediums - it can act like watercolour, it can act like oils, and it has its own innate properties.

Regarding subject matter, again no boundaries exist. Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it. Whether we find inspiration in nature, a man made item or a person, we attempt to show it in a different and interesting way that not only compliments the subject matter itself but also the space that the piece is destined to occupy. To work from nature is to improvise.

As art is such a personal matter, the owner of the piece must feel that it is pleasing and complimentary to him/ her and the space it will inhabit, and for this reason we focus on custom made items where the buyer can be involved in the creative process.
